I hugely recommend buying a ticket online and if possible, book the guided tour*!
There are huge lines especially to the security screening, so I recommend going to the more quiet hours. I would also recommend prioritizing which exhibits you want to take a look at and in what order. I chose to go see the Mona Lisa before anything else. There is a line there, too.
Other than that, I did not find the museum any different from any other museum in europe.... Although the exhibits are quite varied and interesting, I think the more famous exhibits are what makes this museum a 'must'.
*Sadly, I did not manage to get tickets for the guided tour and took the audio guide which wasn't that great. The audio guide is a nintendo consule that has recorded explanations as well as an interactive map that is supposed to guide you to the more popular exhibits. I thought the consule was too heavy to carry, not to mention its uncomfortable earphones.

Louvre museum is closed on Tuesday and also admission free Every Friday from 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. and first Saturday of each month from 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. You should avoid those free hours if you have purchased tickets or Paris pass. We did not know that so we end up waiting a long line to get in because a lot of people try to get in for free. Plan your Paris trip Wednesday to weekend because a lot of places are closed on Tuesday. The biggest hurdle is the security line. Best to make appointment before going so the special security line is much shorter.
Study a little before you go so you know what you want to cover. Otherwise this is a place easy to get lost. Do buy a audio guide which offers some guidance. I wish the audio guide covers more objects unfortunately it only offers less than 5% of the paintings. Never the less, it still offers some introduction
