The Conciergerie was formerly the royal palace in Paris, and a prison - especially during the French Revolution years. According to me, the best view is the Hall of the Guards, even if I could not enjoy it fully, because most of it was hosting a temporary exhibition about Queen Marie-Antoinette through the ages. The exhibition about Marie Antoinette is very interesting, and shows the queen image throughout the times. There are very good explanations to what's on display. The rest of the Conciergerie is a long walk through different parts of the castle, including the cell of Marie Antoinette, her memorial chapel, several cells, including one close to where Robespierre's cell was. The path of the visit is not marked clearly, so it is not easy to follow it. There are a lot of explanations available, a heaven for history buffs but definitely too many for the average tourist, making this part of the visit quite boring. The Conciergerie is a really cool place to spend a few hours in Paris. With its storied history, it is very cool to walk through the old prison. The Marie Antoinette exhibit, in particular, was great. The exhibit displayed how Marie was portrayed in her time and thereafter. It was visually interesting and thought provoking. If you find her a fascinating person in history, I highly recommend.
Visit the building from outside, it is splendid indeed. Thinking of its history gave a feeling not explainable.
